I love seeing the 'underdog' win . . .
I love seeing someone who's been beaten down or trodden upon, be sent to the head of the class . . .
It's the power of God . . . what He can do through us . . .
Which is why I am so geeked about what Mt. Zion Baptist Church, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, is in the midst of . . . declaring a 10-day fiscal fast,' in which people spend only what they need. (Led by the dynamic Dr. Rev. Addis Moore, Mt. Zion is a Bible-preaching, Bible-teaching church that believes in doing what the Word of God says, a church that leads by example and that on Dec. 9, 2015, paid off the remainder of its mortgage, establishing it as 'debt-free.'.)
In the practical, this looks like people who are bound by debt, always struggling and 'borrowing from Peter to pay Paul,' being victimized by highway-robbery, high-finance rate pay-day loan companies and vehicle financing businesses . . .
For if "we," the church, are bound by financial debt and unable and/or unwilling to return to God at least the tithe that He expects, what good are we? How can we finance ministry and be God's change-agents in the world?
Before the 'fiscal fast' was declared, they prepared, buying the gas, food and prescription medicines they would need for the next 10 days.
They are to track what they save — which they would have spent — and then use those savings over 10 days to start their "Emergency Fund," you know, that set-aside of three to six months worth of savings to tide you over in the event of a "flood" — a lost job, a downsizing or illness, or some other issue involving a real need for ready cash.
I won't attempt to tell you what it is: Visit the church's website yourself and download its teachable Bible Study and Fulfillment Hour (Sunday School) handouts — for free!
