STATESVILLE, N.C. — A few years ago, Lady Lisa Perry and some of her fellow praise-dance ministers decided to create a new type of worship experience . . . one that didn't just feature liturgical dance as part of the service, but "WAS" the service.
From the prayer, to the welcome, to the sermon or sermonette, to the closing . . .
Hence was born "The Service In Dance," which has been presented for several years now by Lady Lisa and the Ministry In Motion liturgical dance group at group at Christ Cathedral of Deliverance in Statesville, North Carolina. That group is hosting "The Service In Dance" at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, at her church in Statesville, about 41 miles due north of Charlotte, North Carolina.
She is looking for some other liturgical dance ministries to help complete the service.
“We do this just to have an alternate for the worship of God, an alternative way to present the Word of God," Lady Lisa said in a telephone call. "Some people didn’t grow up in church and being church-preached to all the time is not normal for some people. It’s just a way to preach God to people who don’t come to church (at all or frequently)." She said she was one of those types of people who didn't grow up in church. She is now married to Michael Perry, a bishop, and assistant pastor at the church.
She's been with that dance ministry for about 15 years, the past one as director. Lady Lisa said she started formal dance training as a child — ballet, modern and Africa —all of which proven useful with her dance for God.
"When I went into the ministry, I wanted to bring my knowledge of dance into the ministry," she said.
She said it was a few years before she actually followed up on the nudging to do liturgical dance and studied under Jocelyn Richard, of The Praise Dance Life, earning a certificate as a Liturgical Dance Educator. She's also received a certification as a Praise Dance Fitness leader from Marcia Haynes Cody, a registered nurse who runs Highest Praise Dance Fitness.
In addition to this service totally conducted in dance, Lady Lisa presents one on the last Sunday in February called "Judah Fest," which uses African dance technique. This event isn't completely done in liturgical dance; it has, though, attracted people like Patricia Hall and her Kuumba West African Dance Company.
"We did the whole thing" at first, but it became overwhelming for her ministry, she said. "And so we started inviting people to come and dance with us, and it became more of a community event."
Those wanting to participate in this community event are asked to call 704.500.8007.
